Biocode is a medical technology company that was spun out from South Africa’s Stellenbosch University (SU).
What started as a collaboration between SU’s Physiology and Engineering Departments is now a backed enterprise, dedicated to the research, development and commercialisation of inflammation-centred health-screening and diagnostic solutions.
Biocode’s interdisciplinary team works across the company’s brand family to bring to market innovative solutions that range from proprietary lab methodologies to rapid test products. Empowerment and healthcare transformation are our primary goals. Excellence, innovation and empathy are our guiding principles.

Este Burger
Chief Executive Officer
Este completed her Electronic Engineering Master's degree at Stellenbosch University. Her research fields include biosensor design, fluorescence-based sensing techniques and optical design. She specialises in the detection of anomalous fibrin(ogen) clot-formation due to the presence of circulating inflammagens.
Simone Turner
Chief Operating Officer
As the COO of Biocode Technologies, I am a strategic thinker and task-driven problem solver, bringing a blend of scientific and operational expertise to the team. With a strong background science, my primary focus is on driving innovation and growth within the biotech industry.
Prof. Pretorius
Director, Professor and HOD
Resia is a physiologist, full professor and Head of Department in the Department of Physiological Sciences, Faculty of Science, Stellenbosch University. Her most recent commendations include the NSTF Billiton Distinguished Research Award in 2018, the Department of Science and Technology South African Women in Science runner-up award in 2017 and 2019.
Prof. Engelbrecht
Director & Physiologist
Anna-Mart is a professor in the Department of Physiological Sciences at Stellenbosch University. Among other prestigious awards she has received the Rector’s award for Excellence in Research, the Vice-Rector’s Research Award for exceptional achievement from Stellenbosch University, as well as the Lasec Award for Excellence in Physiology Research from the Physiological Society of Southern Africa.
Prof. Willem Perold
Director & Electronic Engineer
Willem earned his Master's, PhD and DEng degrees from Stellenbosch University in 1977, 1986 and 2017, respectively. From 2008 until his retirement, he served as Vice Dean: Research in the Faculty of Engineering. Willem started the Sensor Applications & Nano-Devices research group and manages a group of about 20 postgraduate students.
